Join Fy Nyth on social media - mewe.com/i/fynyth ! If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. Along with my husband Clay, our dogs, cats, bees, and some poultry, we live in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and are working on setting into our own new little homestead. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and my wonderful partner has joined me more recently. What will you find if you follow the channel and watch the videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
We live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that we are surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at mewe.com/join/arielcelestephotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!

    This stuff is evil. We have our own evil rhizome grass called bermuda grass. It doesn't cause nearly as many problems as quack grass but it does create networks of roots that make it hard to dig and plant in unless you remove it all and it regenerates from very small pieces. We also have a pretty weed that we call onion grass. It spreads when you dig it up because it grows tiny bulbs off the mother bulb and when you dig or pull it it spreads the tiny bulbs. We sift our soil to get the majority out and I just cut them under the surface and kill them with tarps and plastic sheets. Impossible to eradicate but possible to live with and try to keep up with.

      I think she said once there isn’t. Even if there was it wouldn’t get the roots. It only takes a little bit of root to start growing again.

    That was very informative. Not sure if it would be feasible, but wouldn't it be nice to get completely rid of the Quack Grass and re-establish native grasses?

    Thats really pure madness! I am so sorry for you! So do you leave that plastic now until it decays? Will you try to kill the quack grass in between the plastic squares or is that just not possible? I must say, the name quack grass sounds very nice, you know, like the noise, that ducks make. I don´t know who came up with that name, but that person is a bit of a joker!

    Could you find a tree or landscaping company, or many companies to drop their chipped wood and leaves to your homestead. Then you could pile a foot of wood or leaves over the whole fruit forests. Essential cutting off all light and creating a deep wood effect that it could not live in. Many companies want to get rid of it for free. Ask you Could buy a chopper and chip a bunch of that free wood you guys get. Just an idea. Sorry you’re dealing with this nightmare.

    Hi guys. Fully understand your frustration with Quack grass, also known as "Couch Grass" here in the UK. We took over a large plot of land (nowhere near the size of yours😂) and recall the problems clearing the ground of thistles, couch grass etc. We couldn't use a rotorvator since this would simply chop up the roots so it had to be dug and forked by hand. It was a long job but we cleared it. The grass is the stuff of nightmares for gardening. Really enjoy your vlogs and have been watching them for a long time. Stay safe guys. Sid and Nicola, Rugby UK.

    Per the usual your hard work is awe inspiring. I'm wondering however is the plan to replace the plastic every few years? Because with this grass being this invasive wouldn't you essentially have to keep them protected forever?

    • @FyNyth
      @FyNyth 20 годин тому

      Eventually things like trees should get big enough to shade it out and out compete it. But smaller things will probably always need to be protected.

      @@FyNyth I wish there was a way to get rid of it from your property entirely. But even if you cleared a section every year it would probably come in from the neighboring property surrounding you? And presumably you don't want to spend the vast majority of every summer of your life fighting this stuff to get rid of it entirely. You both are working so hard on this! It's looking very promising based of off all your tests. 🙏💜 🎉 🎊

      I love goats. But they would certainly eat all our trees and bushes down. Nothing seems to like eating quack grass and will usually refuse to do so unless starved of all other food. Cows when forced to eat it will loose weight so it doesn't seem good for much.
